RANK 4 | OWGR 6.38
Morikawa has hired Joe Greiner to be his full-time caddie going forward, Colt Knost of CBS Sports reports.
This is quite a change for Morikawa who had been with JJ Jakovac since he turned pro in the summer of 2019. The duo had won six times on the PGA Tour together, including the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 Open Championship. Greiner has been one of the most respected caddies in the locker room. He worked with Max Homa for six years, but the two split prior to The Masters. Greiner was picked up by Justin Thomas for The Masters, who needed a new guy on the bag with his caddie Matt "Rev" Minister suffering a back injury. Greiner and Thomas ended up winning together the following week at the RBC Heritage. While Thomas' and Greiner's relationship was always going to be temporary, Morikawa is hoping that he and Greiner will be able to find success on the course together for a long time. Morikawa has not won on the PGA Tour since the fall of 2023. Their first event together will be at next week's Truist Championship.
Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama posted a two-day total of eight-under at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to miss the cut by two strokes.
It was a surprising missed cut for Morikawa and Kitayama, who had posted an 11-under opening round but the duo had a bogey and two double bogeys in their final six holes Friday to miss the weekend. It's Morikawa's second disappointing tournament in a row as he continues to struggle with his short game, but he remains in strong form with his iron play.
Morikawa vaulted into a tie for 10th place after shooting a three-under 69 in the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship.
Morikawa came into the week looking for payback after the Arnold Palmer Invitational was snatched away from him at the end by Russell Henley. He put himself in great position going into the weekend after rounds of 70-65. Things all fell apart in windy conditions on Saturday when he shot a five-over 77 that included eight bogeys. It was a terrible putting performance for Morikawa who lost nearly four strokes on the greens in round three. He was able to bounce back with a good round on Sunday, however, and ended up getting a backdoor top-10. Morikawa was third in SG: Approach for the week and is hitting the ball well enough to win at any point. He last tasted victory on the PGA Tour back in the fall of 2023.
