McIlroy and Shane Lowry recorded an even-par 72 on Sunday at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to finish tied for 12th place.
The defending champions had five strokes to make up heading into the final round but the pair was unable to get anything going on the back-nine with three bogeys (and a closing birdie) to fall outside the top-10. Nevertheless, McIlroy appeared to be in good form with his driving play. He's committed to the Truist Championship on May 8-11.
McIlroy said that his elbow is "all good" as he looks to complete the career grand slam at The Masters this week, Sean Martin of PGATour.com reports.
McIlroy said following a T5 finish at the Houston Open two weeks ago that his right elbow was giving him some issues during the tournament. He received treatment last week, but it did not hinder his Masters preparations with swing coach Michael Bannon. McIlroy is in possibly the best form he's ever been in entering Augusta after winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in January and THE PLAYERS Championship last month. He leads the PGA Tour this season in SG: Total and scoring average.
McIlroy fired a six-under 64 in the final round of the Texas Children's Houston Open to finish in a tie for fifth place.
This was McIlroy's first time playing Memorial Park in what would be his final tuneup for The Masters. It took him a little bit, as he flirted with the cutline on Friday, but played some great golf on the weekend going 65-64 to score another top-five finish. It was his eighth top-five finish in his last 11 starts worldwide. Included in that are wins at the DP World Tour Championship, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and THE PLAYERS Championship. McIlroy gained strokes in every category at Memorial Park and might be in the best form he's ever been in going into The Masters, as he looks to complete the Career Grand Slam, and win his first major of any kind since 2014.
McIlroy defeated J.J. Spaun in a three-hole aggregate playoff to win THE PLAYERS Championship following his four-under 68 in the final round.
After losing ground with a third-round 73, McIlroy wasted no time getting off to a hot start on Sunday making birdie on the par-4 1st and following with an eagle on the par-5 2nd. That really got his round off a running, and put pressure on a host a players who aren't the most familiar with closing out tournaments. McIlroy made a couple slight errors coming in on the final five holes, but ultimately was able to post 12-under-par in the clubhouse. J.J. Spaun was able to do enough to track him down at the same number and the two would head into a three-hole playoff on Monday after thunderstorms delayed the final round. After the first tee shot where McIlroy just striped it down the center and had just a wedge into the green on the first hole of the playoff at the par-5 16th, it felt over. It was amplified with Spaun flew the island green on the par-3 17th into the water and ultimately made a triple-bogey. McIlroy was able to cruise down the 18th and win THE PLAYERS Championship for the second time (2019). The man trying to end an 11-year drought at the majors is off to a great start to the season after winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in early February as well. McIlroy will look to complete the career grand slam at The Masters in a few weeks time.
